CHARACTER: CANON SECTION
NAME: Jesus Christ (name in Earth: Sei [meaning Saint] Jesus)
AGE: Son of God, so... ageless, I believe!
CANON: Saint Young Men

CANON HISTORY:
Note: Saint Young Men is a series in which the main characters are 'casually adapted' from two historical figures, Jesus Christ and Gautama Buddha, which means while their past stories follow through the factual history of both figures, there are humorous twists added into the events of their life. You could say it’s the alternate universe to their lives, in which the two are friends and live harmoniously alongside each another. There are three different realms depicted in the series: The Celestial Sphere, The Earth, and The Underworld. The Celestial Sphere is where Heaven and Sukhavati (the equivalent to Heaven in Buddhism) are located, which are the places where Jesus and Buddha reside respectively. Greek gods like Zeus and the rest also reside here. The Earth is, well, the Earth. The Underworld has Yama (Enma-daiou in Japanese, the God of Death in Buddhism) conquering the Buddhist Hell, while Lucifer resides at Cocytus (one of the rivers that lead to Hades). It has been implied that Jesus’s Father is the one in the highest position, as the creator of the world.

As stated above, Jesus’s history pretty much went over like how it was in your history books or Biblical studies with quite a number of comedic twists. He was indeed sent to the Earth by his father to be their Messiah, so that human beings will be forgiven their sins. However, they also displayed him being really anxious and started to doubt whether he was an actual Son of God at 30 years old (human age) because his father didn't give him any signs, while the pressure by the people around him about not continuing his Earth father (Joseph)'s business was closing in. Or another time when he felt awkward about being resurrected 3 days after his death, as it felt as if he was some star that announced their retirement extensively but came back three days after. There were also some radical interpretations, like how he was said to walk over the water to save a sinking boat because he couldn’t swim and hated going into water ー which was also depicted during His baptism with John The Baptist, where he asked John to lower the bar for him that instead of going inside the water, John had to pour water over him. Another example was how Jesus said he had to hold back his laughter during his trial before they decided they would crucify Him, and it was for no apparent reason, he just thought he shouldn’t laugh and he instantly had to restrain himself. It wasn’t an exaggeration to say that Jesus was a lot more humanised in the story, he had his own blog and actually played online games even from the time he was in the Heaven. He was also depicted as a free-willed one, weak to his desires, and very naïve.

The story itself started when Jesus and Buddha decided to go on a vacation to Japan. After managing to get through the 19th century, Jesus decided it was high time for him to get some break. Thus, he took a long leave and asked Buddha to come with him. They considered a couple of places, worrying about the number of gods in each country and having to bring souvenirs for them, but finally (Buddha) decided to choose Japan as their destination, as there are 8,000,000 gods over there that bringing souvenir for each one of them would make the gods feel bad instead. (read: an excuse that assured Jesus that his financial matters would be under Buddha’s control during their visit to human world.) Whereas Jesus thought Japan was a good idea because the Japanese users on the online game he played were very polite and their emoticons were cute.

While there were some flashbacks to their past, the story of the series mostly revolved around Jesus and Buddha’s time in Japan. Residing in a simple apartment in Tachikawa using the name of Sei Jesus and Sei Buddha, they embarked on a new adventure together. From Asakusa to jet coasters, Christmas to New Year, time sale to festivals. There were definitely struggles being on Earth and trying not to get their identities revealed ー especially with how Jesus’s stigmata would open whenever he tried to hold back his desires and how miracles happened (water turns into wine, stones to rye bread) when he was amused by some jokes ― but each experience had been another lesson to the two deities. Jesus himself learned a lot about his deity friend, and how to live with someone with a different upbringing. Being the Son of God, Jesus never had to do certain things as the angels would be doing it for him, such as taking care of a sick persーer, deity (whereas usually he could just heal humans). He also made civilian friends, though his first friend was actually part of the yakuza (and he had no clue until it was pointed out), and participated in many festivals and events with the townspeople.

Occasionally, the archangels and Jesus’s disciples as well as Buddha’s would come for a visit to the Earth, or if they were being called over. Jesus and his archangels could get pretty rough in their jokes (e.g. Saint Peter making a joke in which there was some guy with long hair looking scary at the storm walking on the water ― pretty much teasing Jesus, which he followed up with another joke and retort, causing Buddha to sweat buckets because "IS IT OKAY TO JOKE ABOUT THINGS LIKE THIS?!"), but they do their jobs seriously and are overly protective of Jesus. By overprotective meaning cursing wasabi for tormenting Jesus and cutting off a doorknob because it electrocuted his hand. (Though, their frequent visits to the Earth also exposed themselves to the worldly matters, that they'd gone to a point they started an idol boyband together… Yes.) Jesus’s father would sometimes come for a visit too, in the form of a dove. Sometimes he’ll just leave simple messages on a rainbow, like 'Tokyo Banana'.

Apart from them, the residents of the Underworld would sometimes pay a visit to the Earth too. Their relationship with the celestial beings seemed to be depicted in a pretty good way, in the sense that they weren’t actually violent to each other, they could even share the same table to eat. In fact, Lucifer’s fall from Heaven is illustrated in a lighter way, that it was a family feud between him and Michael (his brother). When Lucifer and Mara came for a ‘visit’ to Jesus and Buddha’s apartment, despite causing a huge fuss, Lucifer actually left them a souvenir while Mara made a white lie to excuse himself home because Buddha accidentally ‘hurt’ him with his words (it was a misunderstanding), leaving the two deities in ultimate regret.

In one of the most recently translated chapters, more residents of the other worlds came to the Earth to have some reunion ー Jesus met up with his carpenter friends from the past (so did Buddha with his previous sect, while St. Peter and Andrew met up with Jacob and John as fisherman buddies), only to find that he couldn't relate to them anymore now that he was a god, that he ended up going on another session of drinking with his four disciples and Buddha. Turned out, they had so many things to talk about they didn't stop until the rooster crowed (it's a Biblical joke in reference to this).

CANON PERSONALITY:
Unlike the original Jesus Christ who was a lot more stoic, Jesus in Saint Young Men is very much more animated. Despite his outer look that makes him look like some hipster dude, a few minutes of talk with him will be enough to rob away that impression off you. Shining bright like a diamond, he has an infectious soothing vibes that make you feel happy with his cheerful demeanour ー the kind that sometimes annoys you but it's impossible to hate them. Annoy how, you ask? Well, he's incredibly free-willed and strictly follows his own pace. Being the Son of God, he has the freedom to do anything as he pleases, his carefree disposition is pretty much the aftermath of that. But it also makes talking and becoming friends with him easy, as he's always so open and friendly to everyone, your typical sweet guy-next-door. He also has a vigour that resemble that of a kid more than an adult sometimes. When he plays around in a park, he plays hard. It might also be why he gets along with kids very easily, he treats them as his equal (and acts like one).

For all his light-hearted and borderline insensitive manner, his affections for everyone is incredibly sincere and pure. Even towards Judas, who has forsaken him in the past, he has nothing but agape (explanation here) for him. It shows with a much better clarity towards humans, but when it comes to Lucifer, he shows a little bit more of a tough love with some reprimanding and nagging. Like all the love he receives, he returns just as much or even more than that to everyone. Speaking of love, his anything-works mentality also helps him to get interested into many, many things, but one of the biggest love that he has even since he was still in heaven is comedy. He has always wanted to form a comedy duo with Buddha, and he thoroughly enjoys some good gags (not that it's hard to amuse him) ー he enjoys it so much that when he gets really amused, he'll cause miracles.

Despite everything, Jesus has his flaws too ー that can also be seen as charming, though not always ending in a very charming way. He's very wilful. If Buddha's not around to control him, he'll get what he sees and wants. This leads to him overspending every time he's unsupervised, buying things that he doesn't actually really need, like an expensive ceramic beginner's kit that he only used once and kept inside the closet ever since. It also probably is why he was doing all the worldly things when he was still in heaven, like having a blog in which he review a couple of drama series in a quick span of time, or playing MMORPG online games (in particular, Daemon Hunter). The few times he tried to hold back his desires (e.g. accompanying Buddha to the souvenir stores although he really wanted to see the night parade of the amusement park), his stigmata would open and cause him to start dripping blood from his head. This particular quality of his also decreases his ability to withstand his fears, as he just succumbs to them. When he went swimming with Buddha, upon being asked to put his head into water, the same thing happened ー stigmata opening, blood dripping from the head ー and when he tried again, he ended up dividing the water the way Moses did. Best part was that he wasn't even aware of it until Buddha asked him to open his eyes. He also lacked the conscience to fix things after being reprimanded for it, despite being genuinely scared and apologised about it (read: mostly overspending).

His worries, as Buddha pointed out, tend to be not very god-like. He's also very oblivious, that he didn't realise he made friends with a yakuza member, discussing things together nonchalantly while making the people around them drop cold sweats. Even after finding about it, he didn't see a problem with it, which could be a good thing or a bad thing ー sometimes he just lets things slide too easily. That doesn't mean he doesn't get angry at all, though. He does, at times, but it tends to be a little towards pretty or unreasonable. One time he blamed Lucifer for his burnt electrical cord, another he scolded the waves of the sea for scaring him. Another thing that doesn't make him very happy is when the people in the Heaven (especially archangels) gets overprotective towards him, making him feel like he's being treated like a kid. They managed to come to an agreement that the archangels wouldn't bother him if he put corner guards on all the furniture at the apartment, to which Jesus agreed to, proving his childlike simple-mindedness. (Meanwhile Buddha quietly thought to himself 'they downgraded him from child to toddler…'.)

He's very much focused on himself, not that he doesn't care for the people around him, He just doesn't bother too much about things (e.g. not realising that Buddha walking beside him was only wearing towels after they left the hot springs), making him easy going and doesn't brood on things for too long. He'll get down, but he can get up pretty quickly too and doesn't think too much about things that have passed. But because of this, he's also very self-conscious and it's hard to surprise him during special events, as he'll have some expectations that someone to do something for him. A certain degree of narcissism is indicated by the way He gets overly aware when people think He looks like Johnny Depp.

Despite the previous point about him being self-focused, he's very people-motivated. When it comes to himself, he doesn't really get too motivated to do things, but if it's for the sake of the people around him, he'll get his gear up within a few snaps of fingers. What sets him back, though, sometimes are his fears/dislikes and he has quite a number of them. To name a few: water, nails and gore (from the memory of crucifixion), snakes and apple (reference to Adam and Eve, the fall of humanity to sin), seasick/motion sickness (reference to when he slept in the boat during a stormy night in the sea with his disciples).

All in all, 'freewheeling' is the best word to explain his character. His attitude is probably attributed by the amount of love the Heaven residents poured on him, and the way-too-chillax way of living of his parents. His father, despite being The God, actually dressed up as a crow instead of dove when he came to the Earth for a Halloween event. Meanwhile, his mother enjoyed coming down to Earth to support (Hikawa) Kiyoshi ー this is a play of the word 'kiyoshi' as Silent Night in Japanese is 'Kiyoshi no Yoru' ー which isn't really something you expect from the mother of a god.

SKILLS/ABILITIES:
Note: Though Jesus can literally do almost everything, I'll only be listing the abilities that he's performed through the translated chapters so far.
  • IMMORTALITY
Well, he's the Son of God, so naturally, he can't die. Even if he's in human form, the Heaven beings are always looking out for him, making sure he doesn't get hurt (not even a single scratch is allowed!), so there you have it.

  • SUMMONING
Jesus can summon anyone or anything even subconsciously. From what have been shown so far, he can summon animals and the archangels when he really wanted something or was in a trouble. When he was feeling hungry, animals would come knocking on their apartment door bringing a match, ready to be sacrifices. When he had a static electricity from the doorknob, the archangels came down and Uriel (one of the archangels) straight away cut it off with his sword. When he was jumping around at the park, he jumped too high that the angels thought he wanted to go home and started coming down to help him fly.

  • SHAPESHIFTING
Not of himself, but of the things around him (even in his subconscious). An example is when he's singing in karaoke, the tacky video displayed will slowly become Hollywood-level cinematography.

  • DIVIDING THE WATER
This has been displayed when Buddha asked to try to put his head into the water to get used to breathing underwater. Instead, the water divided so he didn't have to be underwater.

  • MIRACLES
When amused or really happy, miracles happen around him, sometimes to his dismay. Water becomes wine. Stones become bread (but he only specialises in rye bread, he can't make a yakisoba bread or anything else). His crown of thorns bloom flowers. The bicycle he rides fly in the sky from the elation.

  • HEALING
As long as you're not a deity, he can fix you up without problem. Whatever sickness you might have, he has the power to heal you.

CHARACTER: AU SECTION
AU NAME: Joshua "JoJo" Josephs
AU AGE: 32 years old
PHYSICAL DIFFERENCES: A sketch. That's pretty much how he dresses, combination of Western and Asian elements. He's more buff than he is in canon, also considerably taller, as he exercises quite a bit. Rough measurements.

AU HISTORY:
Joshua Josephs, the son of Josef Josephs and Mariana Matusevitch, was born in Bethlehem, State of Palestine into a family of carpenters. Both Josephs and Matusevitch are two prestigious names in the field, known for their incredibly high customer satisfaction, also known for their endless rivalry against each other. But Josef and Mariana saw things differently from their predecessors ― they decided to end the decades-long rivalry tradition. Instead, they joined hands to expand their business internationally, branching out to general construction business, joining ventures with smaller companies of the same field to acquire business partners and stability. Despite their efficiency and highly intelligent strategizing in their jobs, off the work, the two live precariously, and by no means were conventional as parents. Their free-willed nature were naturally inherited by their kids, but especially by Joshua. As the youngest child of the family, he spent most of his childhood being babied by both his parents and siblings. Needless to say, he was never lacking in affection and care, nor had major difficulties in acquiring anything growing up. However, while it made him wilful, he wasn't dependent at the least. On the contrary, he was always wanting venture on things on his own to the point it worried his family (e.g. going on impromptu 'adventures' by himself).

Young Joshua displayed tiny seeds of talent in the field of art ― definitely not in illustrations, but his crafts tended to be meticulously well-done. Unfortunately, he wasn’t made for school. Learning wasn’t something that Joshua disliked (in fact, he loves it, even now), but sitting down to read and listen had proved to be very difficult for Joshua. His parents received many complaints from the teachers about his restless attitude, but it never really worried them much. It did get ‘better’ (read: he could sit down and focus listening for a couple of lessons, when before it was impossible for him to even finish a lesson without him walking around) by the time he was 12, but every year afterwards, his interest in school decreased more and more. The only lesson that he truly enjoyed was the verbal English language lesson, causing the young Joshua to feel unmotivated. As consolation, his father would let him visit his workshop a few blocks away from their home after school, to help out with some woodcraft and ask questions. But it didn’t stop him to continue feeling antsy. At 15, he declared to his parents that he would like to try out a different way of learning and wanted to try it on his own.

They decided to send him abroad after finishing his basic compulsory education at 16 years old. During this time, it was highly unusual for parents (especially in their country) to do so, but they thought it would do their son some good, especially with how the political condition of the country seemed to worsen every year. They sent him to Melbourne, Australia; while the rest of the family decided to move out of Palestine to Bangkok, Thailand the year after ― where they had another office that was planned to be reformed as their headquarter for contingency plan. The first two years in Australia were Joshua's secondary studies, which, despite being similar to what it was like back home, didn't bore him much as he was in a completely new environment. He relied a lot on the friends he made with some language barrier struggles that he had (he could understand English, but he wasn't used to speaking it yet). Eventually, he improved, but still troubled a lot of his friends as Joshua tended to have his head on the clouds ー the same continued during his tertiary studies. Maybe it was the vibe he gave off, but his friends tend to mother him and worry about him. Forgetting to eat, forgetting the deadline, wrongly-buttoned shirts, undone zippers. You name it, they had it covered. Joshua was definitely independent, but also very sloppy. His family would visit him in Australia once a year, until Joshua completed his studies as an Interior Design major. He took some Journalism and Architecture classes too while he was at it, finding that learning in university was a lot more exciting than his previous studying experiences, since he got to learn what he wanted to learn.

After graduation, Joshua started freelancing and travelling around the world to try his luck and polish his skills. Coincidentally, his family did the same to spread their business wings. They barely could meet anymore, but it didn’t bother Joshua much as they kept in contact constantly. Joshua started out with bigger countries so he could explore from one state to another ― from Canada to US, Brazil, India (very briefly, he never got to learn their language), China (same as India), Japan, before finally settling down at Recollé ― making one whole round. Each country had their own flair and quirks, which made it either easy or difficult for Joshua to get things rolling, but neither of them let him stay for too long, both immigration-wise and preference-wise. After a while, he would feel like he wanted to see something else, something new, and move on. Japan was the country he lived at the longest at (four years) compared to the rest as he loved the arts, the culture and the language. But it was lacking one fundamental point: the people. He didn’t have any friends he would consider close to his heart, which should be a given with how he moved around, but there was an extra sense of detachment with the people there, the line between the foreigners and the locals. Despite managing to secure a position in an interior design company there, the social culture (especially the hierarchical relations) didn’t work very well with him, neither did the workload and inflexibility. After long contemplation, Joshua decided to hop to Recollé and as of now, he sees it as the perfect place where he belongs.

Recollé was very much receptive of foreigners, and it made Joshua instantly felt at home, the feeling he hadn’t quite felt from the rest of the countries that had filled his passport. The first friend he made in here might also be a big part of the reason of why he felt so, the first impression had molded his perspective as such. When he first arrived in the city, Joshua had no idea where he could stay, or from where he should start looking. In a daze, he decided to take shelter in a coffee shop nearby, only to have the barista mix his drink up with another person. That other person was Judah Behar (Note: Player’s permission granted!), who was looking for a roommate at the time. It was a coincidence that looked a lot like fate, and the excitement filled Joshua up to the brim, bringing him into an impulsive decision within himself to try and make Recollé his base.

At the present time, Joshua is working as an interior designer at his own ‘company’, JJ Styles. It’s not registered officially just yet, but he accepts any kinds of design works, as well as some furniture repairing or making. With the skills he has earned throughout the years, his keen eyes and nimble hands are ones that can be trusted when it comes to the job. However, as he’s not been getting that many orders, he’s contemplating of starting a side business, or possibly taking part-time jobs. He's still rooming with Judah even now, and is Sakata Gintoki's neighbour (Note: Player’s permission granted!).

AU PERSONALITY:
  • He's still generally very kind-hearted and gentle, but slightly more resilient in holding back his desires (whereas in canon his stigmata will start opening up, dripping blood out of his head), since he's learned how to be a responsible adult.

  • Despite that, he can still be irresponsible at times, especially when he doesn't realise what he's doing is harmful for the others. He's lack of awareness and inability to see what's around him is definitely to blame for this.

  • There are times when he gets wary/suspicious of people, given the years meeting different kinds of people of different culture, but naivety is still very much a big part of him, so does the tendency to see the best in people, so benefit of a doubt is something he'll give out quite generously. This quality of his is, however, a double-edged sword, as he tends to cause troubles to others despite not meaning to ー whether by his clumsiness or insensitivity, like the tendency to assume that people see things the same way he does (e.g. letting Yaboku Tomioka (Note: Player’s permission granted!) bum at his place without asking for Judah's thought on it first).

  • Clumsiness is a new addition to his flaws, though! In canon, he's depicted as careless, but not clumsy. As Joshua, he's incredibly clumsy, which is rather ironical considering his nimble fingers in crafts.

  • The fears that he had in canon, apart from water, is no longer there as he has no traumatic experience thus far, but it might serve a purpose as a trigger or cause a deja-vu eventually. In a way, he's not as fearful to things, but he'll be reluctant to try out new things when it looks potentially 'dangerous' (like the dentist, or some exotic cuisines).

  • Comedy is still a big part of his interest! He easily laughs at simple jokes and puns, but the difference is that he won't be making them, because he isn't very confident in his comedic skills (whereas in canon he even has his eyes on debuting as comedian). However, he does have a secret notebook where he dumps all his joke materials (and references he jot down when watching comedy shows) at.

  • Definitely has a lot more drive than in canon. Though he doesn't have a clear vision of his goals, he loves learning new things. They're always very impulsive, though. When he's really in the mood of learning a certain thing, he's all hyperactive hyperdrive; but when he's not, he'll easily get bored and switch to other things. He likes keeping himself busy and can't stand just relaxing at home doing nothing.

  • Part of the reason of why he likes to be busy, is because it's a habit that he's been using for years to fill the loneliness he feels within him subconsciously. Being in Recollé has helped him to relax considerably as he enjoys the interactions he's been getting from the people around him, but there's always this lingering feeling of wanting to be needed. He doesn't think about it nor has he realised it himself, though, as he has always taken things as they come and doesn't question anything much.

  • The biggest change would be how he doesn't belong to any particular belief. He does trust the general idea of the existence of God, since he was born into a Christian family, but he doesn't think much beyond that. Doing good is something that comes naturally to him. That said, he embraces hedonism and his overspending level is out of this world.
